Survey regarding the direction of a gay-straight alliance in Revelstoke
The Safe Spaces Revelstoke Society is now a year and a half old. We have worked to increase the visibility of, and appreciation and support for LGBTQ community members and visitors.
Visibility: We distributed rainbow flag stickers for businesses and organizations and participated in the 2015 Canada Day Parade – a big step forward with the mayor, city councilors, leading members of the school district and many community members joining us and cheering us on. We supported the School District to display rainbow flag plaques in all schools.
Advising: We advised the City and the School District 19 on policy by participating in the Revelstoke Community Protocol to Address Hate- and Bias-based Incidents and the Revelstoke Diversity Action Plan. We worked with the School District as they formulated their diversity and inclusion policy.
Educating: We worked with our school partners to support delivery of ‘Leave out Violence’ (2015) and ‘Out in the Schools’ (2016) workshops for students, parents, and community service providers. We supported the formation of a ‘Safe Space’ at RSS and the distribution of LGBTQ information integrated into a variety of booths at the annual Wellness Fair.
Celebrating: We worked with the Revelstoke Performing Arts Centre to bring in the Pride film. We also supported the Centre in 2015 when they brought in the contemporary dance company Machine Noisy for a 14 day residency exploring issues around gender and identity through contact dance with 10 local youth culminating in a youth-led performance.
Collaborating: Our community partners include:
· The City of Revelstoke, Social Development Coordinator and Youth Liaison
· The Revelstoke Arts Council and the Revelstoke Performing Arts Centre
· The Revelstoke Theatre Company
· Okanagan College, Embrace BC
· Castle Joe Books
· The Revelstoke Current
· Balu Yoga
· Revelstoke RCMP Victim Services
· School District 19
